The Amateur Sepaktakraw Association of Sri Lanka has made arrangements to conduct the Sepaktakraw Championship 2015 for the 12th occasion on April 25 and 26 at the Indoor Sports Complex of St. Joseph’s College Colombo.
A large number of men’s teams and eight women’s teams are expected to participate at this year’s championship. Sepaktakraw is a game similar to volleyball played on a court the size of a badminton court with a rattan ball. It is extremely popular in countries such as Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia and India and is now catching up in Canada and Russia.
The championship will consist of two events – The Double event and the Regu event. The Double event will be held on April 25 and the Regu event on April 26.
The Secretary General and Chairman of the Organising Committee M. Jaldin stated that the Association has conducted Sepaktakraw Orientation and Development Programmes in Trincomalee, Nawalapitiya, Hambantota, Tissamaharama, Kegalle and Colombo and had assisted them to form their respective clubs and associations and has also provided them with balls, nets, etc. The coaching panel of the association has also made periodical visits to these places in order to monitor their progress.
This year’s competition is very important as it is being held after seeking the long-awaited affiliation with the Ministry of Sports. With the game being stabilised in the outstations the sport now has a greater representation.
The contenders for the championship this year will be between Uva Malay Association and the Colombo Malay Cricket Club with Kolonnawa and Mabole teams offering stiff resistance.
